5 Steps to Fixing Your Credit for Unsecured Lines of Credit

Repairing your credit is the first thing you need to do if you want to obtain unsecured lines of credit. There are several things you need to do in order to make this happen. You can repair your credit on your own and it may take some time. Never go to a credit repair agency because it will only appear that you have no idea how to manage your finances on your own.

The first thing you need to do to repair your credit so you can qualify for unsecured lines of credit is to obtain copies of your credit report. The three major credit reporting agencies are Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. You are entitled to a free credit report every year at no charge. You do not have to pay anyone for your credit report. All you have to do is call each of the three credit reporting agencies phone numbers and ask for your credit report.

When you receive your credit reports you need to compare all reports and determine which line items you really owe. Make a list of all of the derogatory items on your report. Keep in mind that some things might show up on one report and not show up on another. This is common with the credit reporting agencies. Once you have a list of the valid items you should also make a list of all of the items that are not valid. It is common to see errors on a credit report.

The third thing you need to do is write dispute letters for every item that is not valid that you do not owe. You will have to write a letter for every item on each credit report. This means that if you show a debt on two reports you will need to write two letters. The credit reporting agencies will give each of the debtors 30 days to respond and prove that you actually owe the debts. If they prove you do owe the debts you will be required to pay them off if you want to obtain unsecured lines of credit.

Once all of your debts are clear to you the next step is to begin paying off your debts. The best thing to do is pay off the smaller debts first because they look the worst. A debt on your credit report for $10 looks really bad. This should be paid right away. You should call every creditor when you are ready to pay them and ask them what the payoff amount is. Most creditors will allow you to pay 60% and they will accept that for a payoff. This means that you can have your credit paid off faster because it really will be cheaper.

When you want to obtain unsecured lines of credit you must repair your credit scores first. The steps to repairing your credit include obtaining your credit reports, making lists of what is valid and what is not, disputing all debts, calling all of your creditors and making deals with them, and paying on the debts. You will see your credit scores rise as you pay your debts.
