7 Money Saving Plumbing Tips

By: Chad Wiley

Paying a plumber can be an extreme waste of money in some cases, because there are many things that you can do yourself that will save you hundreds of dollars in plumbing fees.

1. Look for and fix any and all leaky faucets and toilets.
Fixing a toilet, faucet or lawn system reduces water consumption. One leaking toilet will waste enough water in one year to fill a swimming pool.

2. Always have replacement parts on hand.
To conserve water and save money have replacement parts on hand. Plan do get these parts each year so you will not be surprised when one is needed and you did not budget for it. Homes that are older need more maintenance over, including your plumbing system. By putting money aside each month for repairs, you will have the money when it is needed.

3. Insulate.
If you live in an area where weather is usually mild, insulate pipes close to exterior walls for those unexpected colder months. In the long run, this saves money on plumbing and repairs as well as energy. The insulation will also help in months where you are trying to keep your house cool.

4. Install shut-off valves and timers.
Install shutoff valves for fixtures and plumbing. Look for a main shutoff valve that will turn off water to the whole house. You may need this in an emergency. You can save a lot of money by investing in a timer for the water heater. Set a timer to turn the electric water heater off when everyone goes to bed and then to come on again before you get up.

5.Flush Your Water Heater.
Flushing your water heater regularly will help you save.

6. Do not use unnecessary water.
More than half of the water used in a typical home is used in the bathroom. Between 2 and7 gallons of water are used every time to flush a toilet. Do not flush things down the toilet that go in the garbage. To conserve on water, take showers rather than baths. Showers that are very long and hot only waste water and energy to heat the water. Save by turning off the water when shaving or brushing your teeth; clean water is being wasted down the drain.

Do not waste water with the dishwasher by running loads that are not full. While washing dishes in the sink, do not keep the water running.

When washing clothes make sure you have full loads or use controls when washing smaller loads. Use cold water instead of hot for the rinse cycle.

7. Use water-efficient plumbing fixtures. This can be a big way to save not only water by energy as well.
