7 Tips to Planning a Successful Home Party

By: Laura Worechek

So you’ve decided to be a hostess of your own home party, but you’re wondering what you need to do to make the party a success. Luckily, having a home product party is not that different from hostessing any other event. Create a simple party planner and follow a schedule for getting things done, such as house cleaning, shopping and decorating, to help things go much smoother before and during your party.

As soon as possible, go through your hostess kit, to see if there are things that your direct sales representative needs you to do, which will help you to have a more successful party.

Also, as soon as you’ve got time, go through the sales catalog, and decide which hostess gifts you want to earn, and see what the total party sales need to be in order for you to earn other free gifts or discounted merchandise. As soon as you have an idea of what you want and what your total party sales need to be, talk to your closest friends and family members about it. Tell them what you need, and ask for their help. (After all, the great hostess gifts and free or discounted merchandise are one of the main reasons people often host their first party.) Ask if they know of anyone else who should be invited to come. Find out if anyone who isn’t coming is interested in purchasing anything out of the catalog. If you’ve got friends, family members or colleagues who have a different circle of friends, see if anyone is interested in passing around the catalogs for you, or taking orders. (Don’t forget to ask if someone will also host their own party).

Planning a successful home party is not difficult if you follow these 7 tips:

1. Invite between two and three times as many guests as you think will show up. People get busy, and many times they have good intentions but something comes up at the last minute. And according to experienced direct sales representatives, about half of the people a hostess invites will not show up.

2. Give people enough time to plan on coming, but not so much time that they forget about your party. A good timeline is between two and three weeks. Any less than that and your guests may already have plans, and any longer and they’re liable to forget about the party altogether.

3. Be excited and let people see and hear your enthusiasm. The more excited you are about the party, the more other people will be too. You can also create a specific party theme, and let people know that they’ll have the chance to win prizes, shop and have a great time.

4. Call your guests twice – the first time within 48 hours after they should have received their invitations, and the second time about 24 hours before the day of the party. Call the first time to make sure that everyone got their invitation, and to find out if they’re coming. (Make sure that you let them know that you’re really looking forward to them attending). And call the day before the party to remind them of the date and time. Let them know again how much you’re looking forward to their coming and that you hope they win one of the fabulous prizes.

5. If you’re providing refreshments, make them something that’s simple for you to make, and whenever possible do as much of the preparation ahead of time, so that you get to enjoy your party and being with your guests. (Remember, most of the time people are coming so that they can look at the product line, do some visiting and some shopping. They’re not coming for a four-star meal.)

6. Talk to your direct sales representative if you have any questions, concerns and to get any tips she’s got from previous parties. She may have ideas that you haven’t thought of, and will always be a font of knowledge for helping you to plan a successful home party.

7. Relax and have a good time! Don’t forget that while part of the reason for you having a home party in the first place is to win some great hostess gifts and discounts on other items that you plan to buy, another reason for the party is so that you can spend a fun afternoon or evening with friends and family.
