Basic Shower Curtain selection and care

By: Steven Rollins

One of the most important parts in decorating a bathroom is the shower curtain.
Various types of styles are readily available. They are usually made of vinyl, cloth or plastic. There are hookless curtains, designer curtains, and even children’s curtains on the market these days.
Curtains provide privacy, water protection, and add spice to your bathroom décor. Layer a cloth shower curtain over a vinyl or plastic one to achieve water protection and design. Those who are interested in both water protection and design use two curtains: a vinyl or plastic one facing inside the shower and a cloth one facing out. Different sizes of shower curtains are available.
Measure your shower to determine the right size curtain. The standard size is 72 inches by 72 inches. Wide curtains extend farther then standard to fit larger showers. If you have a child’s shower, you will want to use extra long curtains to avoid spills.
Proper installation prevents water leakage. Make sure you have all the tools like the hooks, loops or any special fixtures for installation. Be careful when you are hanging the curtain that you don’t tear the material, since tears can be frustrating and cause it to fall off the hooks. Use a step stool or other solid object when you hang your curtains.
If bacteria, mold or mildew occur, use a disinfectant. Allow the shower stall and curtains to dry thoroughly every day. Washing the cloth curtain regularly is a good idea. Replace it every one to three years.
Now that you know about shower curtain selection, installation and maintenance, shopping for your curtain will be simple.
