Causes Of Teeth Discoloration And Whitening Methods

By: John Porter

Teeth color varies from individual to individual. Like hair or skin color. There are a number of techniques available for Teeth Whitening. This discussion explains whitening procedures that can be applied to brighten the natural shade of the teeth.

There are many reasons for discoloration of teeth. Habits of drinking coffee, tea, red wine or other food and strong colored drinks can cause stains. Smoking is also one of the major causes, which results in a yellowish staining of the teeth. Teeth can become darker naturally, as people grow older. Tartar build-up, cavity or tooth decay and fillings are also responsible for discoloration of teeth.

Like all other body organs, teeth too have blood vessels and nerves inside of them. If these blood vessels and nerves get damaged the tooth may also get discolored.

Few staining can be caused due to diseases or medications. Like, if the antibiotic, tetracycline is given to a minor whose teeth are still developing, their permanent teeth may form with a yellow or greenish shade.

There are some simple systems to enhance the whiteness of discolored teeth. Consult your hygienist or dentist to have your teeth polished or scaled on a regular basis. This also involves removing any tartar deposition. The dentist will give advice for preventing tooth decay and cavity.

Reducing smoking and not consuming strongly colored food or drink and tooth brushing regularly will help to stop stains recurring.

Whitening toothpastes are more abrasive than regular one. Those may remove surface stains. However, they do not change the normal shade of the teeth. Replacing your crowns and metal fillings with natural colored replacements can also be fruitful.

There are various types of products available for teeth whitening. Some of those you can buy and use yourself, those are OTC products, while others require a consult to the dentist. Over-the-counter (OTC) products are available from most major chemists' counter. Generally, the OTC kits contain rubber mouth guards and tubes of whitening gel.

There are various different techniques by which dentists can whiten the teeth. These are classified into external techniques and internal techniques.

The external techniques mean that the color of the teeth is brightened by applying a whitening gel on the outer surfaces of the teeth. Applying whitener in this process may not be effective for few types of discoloration, such as that caused by damaged blood vessels or metal fillings inside the tooth.

The internal whitening techniques mean that the color of a tooth is lightened by inserting a whitener inside the tooth. Internal whitening can only be done on teeth which have been successfully root- canal treated. It means that the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth have been replaced by a rubber filling.
