Ceiling Fans and Your Home

By: Steven Rollins

If you’re getting ready to install a ceiling fan, there are a few things you should know before you begin. The most important factor is safety. You have to make sure that the unit is attached and securely anchored to an electrical box that can hold the amount of weight, motion and speed the fan will generate. When it is fully assembled, a ceiling fan can weigh 30 pounds, and sometimes more! Please don’t remove a light to replace it with a fan without a junction box. If you are inexperienced in electrical wiring, hiring a professional would be the best idea. Be sure the ceiling fan is at a sufficient height to not accidentally come in contact with anyone’s head or arms. A person should be able to raise their arms above their heads without touching the fan. The minimum height for the fan should be 7 feet above the floor. You need to be aware of certain long objects like fishing poles and ladders that could easily hit the fan’s blades.
It would also be beneficial to learn how to use the fan for the best results. It is assumed that ceiling fans are only used for cooling a room during the summer months. Did you realize that you could warm a room in the winter with a ceiling fan? For cooling, you should have the blades set so that they blow the air downwards. To heat a room, let the blades circle upwards to cause the cooler air to mix with the higher warmer air. This forces the warm air down and helps with heating.
With this informative tutorial, you should be able to install your fan. Remember to follow all instructions in your ceiling fan kit.
