Cheap Webhosting Versus Affordable Webhosting

By: Alex Corman

What makes cheap webhosting so cheap? What do you sacrifice to have this lower price? Nearly all cheap webhosting options are shared web hosting. This fact alone means that you are sacrificing several options in terms of security, reliability and speed.

Cheap, shared web hosting is generally placed on a server with many other users who have purchased the same package. Therefore if one of the other users does something with their hosting that modifies the operation of the server like creating a faulty CRON job that continues to pull resources away from the server, your site(s) will be affected by it. This may mean that your website(s) could be offline for an unknown amount of time due to the negligence of a single user. Since there are often dozens of users on a single shared server, the odds of a possible crash are against you.

Sharing a web hosting server also means sharing the overall bandwidth available to the server. If a user hosts a high traffic site, or a website that contains lots of video or flash that take a long time to load, your website will suffer as a result. If you had the intention of hosting a site like that yourself, you may not want to do it on shared web hosting.

If one of the users that shares your server has security flaws within their site there is a chance that any potential damage that may be done will be done to the server itself, not any of their sites alone. The resulting crashes and limited bandwidth will be suffered by your site(s) as well.

Cheap web hosting is the right option if your plan is to host several small, text based content sites and slow loading or downtimes will not affect your plans. Just remember that cheap, shared hosting is not always comparable to affordable webhosting.
