Choosing the Perfect Baby Name: Tips for Success

By: Gen Wright

Searching through the mess of potential baby names can be both inspiring but at the same time tiring. How do you decide which name is right for the baby you have yet to meet? How will you and your spouse ever agree on a single name? And finally, once you have picked a name, what happens if it does not suit for the baby after she is born?

Thankfully, there are things to think over that should make it easier for you. Selecting the best name for your child should be one of the most fun aspects of planning, and these suggestions will help put you on the right path.

#1 - Meaning

Think over the origin of the name and what it could signify to you or to people close to you. Will this baby signify something to you or is she a miracle? Search for the meanings of your favorite names to find the baby name that signifies what your baby represents. Likewise, carefully analyze the meanings of names. Settling on a name only to discover that you picked "the idiot" from all the baby boy's names available can put a damper on your fun.

#2 - Impression

You should consider the impression of the name on you and others. Is it hard to pronounce or comprehend? Does it roll of the tongue easily or does it require a real effort? If you have a long last name, you probably need to stay away from a very long first name. Think about the way a first name sounds with your family name. Often baby names are appealing on paper, but much less impressive in real life.

#3 - Memories

Does a certain memory inspire you? As you look for potential names, consider what memories that name conjures up. Did you pick a name that sounds entirely too much like your ex-boyfriend? This may make things a bit awkward for you and your current spouse. Some names are simply not an option, I doubt any wife would kick up a fuss about not being able to name their baby girl after their man's ex-fiancee.

#4 - Religion

Often a persons religious belief plays a role in making the final decision among baby names. Certain religions have specific expectations regarding the birth of children into the faith, therefore if you are active in your faith, you should explore what your religion have to say about naming a newborn child.

#5 - Honor

Does your list of favorite baby boy names include the name of a ancestor you are contemplating about honoring?

Naming your baby girl after her special aunt is extremely special to all parties involved and can help the baby girl develop a personal connection with her namesake as she grows older. Middle names are used often for the purpose of honoring somebody important . Naming a child after a family tradition works in a similar way. For the childs benefit, if you decide to name him after his father or her mommy, find the baby a nickname to avoid the possible mixups resulting from having two people with the same name living in the same place.
