Cloud computing and platform as a service – are they the same?

Starting from the simple idea of allowing users around the world to interact with one another, the internet has now become something without which some people cannot survive. Just about everything has moved in this virtual environment that helps get things done a lot faster.

Internet users can communicate in real-time without the necessity of using who knows what kind of gadgets, they can transfer data from one part of the world to the other in seconds instead of waiting for mail delivery services to do their job, they can do their shopping without even going to the market, listen to music, watch videos and much, much more.

The internet holds so many secrets that average users have no idea of. As users the thing we know how to do best is to use what is given to us without asking too many questions. But as people who know a thing or two about the web we may have heard lots of terms like web applications, cloud computing, web content management, platform as a service and other things like that.

Cloud computing is something that has been developed recently and enjoys great success. The first word of the expression makes reference to the internet, while the second word implies the use of computers. Let me try to explain a little better.

To put it in a sense where most can understand, internet users can access the required services over the internet – in the cloud – without knowing anything about it or have any kind of control over it. The users are now longer required to deal with the usual hassle of the internet applications known until now.

Usually an application required many things: you were required to download software, install it on your computer, run it and then have access to all its benefits. That meant that you needed to know how to install and use the software, as well as control its functionality.

With platform as a service the hardware required to run the application is located in a distant part of the world, somewhere you have no idea of its existence and there is no need to download any other software. All you will be required to do is access it and run everything you want over the internet, with just a few clicks of a button and without any headaches.

Cloud computing incorporates platform as a service and lots of other technologies that are meant to make the use of the internet applications no longer dependent on the hardware and software available within the user’s reach and move them over the internet.

Cloud computing is also confused with grid computing. The second is a much larger concept that grants users access to a lot more resources, among which clouds can be included. Also, platform as a service is a smaller part of the clouds.
