Do You Want Cell Phone or Smart Phone?

By: Brian Knapp

The idea that a phone is just for making calls is something that is becoming blurred very quickly with the advent of so many "smart phones" that can do everything that a PDA once could, and even some new tricks that have PDA never quite learned. Now phones can do GPS, e-mail, texting, web browsing, and almost anything else that a laptop computer can do. There was once a fine line between a PDA and a cell phone, but now there is no line at all.

How to choose a cell phone? The easiest way to choose a cell phone is to start by figuring out what it is that you want. Do you need text and e-mail? Do you like to surf the web from your phone? These things only to be considered before purchasing a phone.

Also any communication outside the device will have to be paid for. Cell phone plans are a whole different topic. Many cell phones have family plans now, but advanced cell phone such as smart phones can cost you a whole are more each month. The biggest reason is that the Internet plans for these phones are usually charged per phone, not per family, like your home Internet is. Thus, if you have two or three smartphones on your plan, your bill will skyrocket.

Also, keep that in mind that there are no perfect electronic devices. All devices have their share of quirks, and cell phones are no different. You just have to find one that fits your style and your particular needs.

Once you have a list of a few models, consider the other functions of the cell phones and what you really need. Do you really need a camera? You might be better off going with a simple digital camera. Digital cameras by themselves have become so thin and light that they are almost smaller than a cell phone. Personally, I would rather have a 10 megapixel slim digital camera than I would a one megapixel camera in my phone.

Do you send a lot of the e-mail? Do you receive a lot of e-mail? If you do, you might want to consider a phone like the Blackberry or the iPhone because they are specifically designed to send and receive large amounts of e-mail. Both phones have push e-mail capabilities that will work seamlessly with your office or home e-mail accounts. Many people want to have this feature can't live without it.

If you spend the time thinking about what you need and attack the project the right way, you will end up with something you will wonder how you ever lived without. Today's cell phones and PDAs have become integrated heavily into or society. Enjoy your cell phone and use it responsibly!
