Former First Lady Hilliary Clinton Becomes An Aim of Spyware Scheme

By: Isaiah Henry

Surrounded by computer experts and a detail of Secret Service Men, even the presidential candidate was not immune to a malware scam. Millions of the former First Ladys supporters and constituents received an email entitled Hillary Clinton Full Video!! The email did not contain a video of Mrs. Clinton; it had absolutely nothing to do with her in fact. Instead, the email contained an intrusive, annoying and sometimes dangerous malware scam.

Doug Bowers of Symantec (internet security software giant) reported they had expected something like this to happen due to the large numbers who have following the presidential race closely. His expectations were on target; Hillary Clinton and Ron Paul (both presidential candidates) have both been targeted by malware scams.

Most people think if they have taken the precaution of installing security software that they are safe from malware scams. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Even some the of most popular internet security suites, like Norton or Spyware Doctor, cant protect your computer from some malware. The malware scam that was affixed to the Clinton email was attached to a Trojan horse (or Trojan) like many are.

The way the malware was able to operate in the Hillary Clinton email was like this: After opening the email, people around the globe were directed to click on a link. The link was set up to look like a Google search page and, thereby, mislead people. The link allowed the malware scam to install itself onto every computer who had accessed it. Once installed on the computer, the malware can run rampant causing annoyance, irritation and danger to the computer itself.

Here is how Malware works: Recipients of Clintons email open it and then are directed to click on a link. The link looks like a Google search page; it isnt. Instead, it is the Malware scam installing itself onto the recipients computer operating system. This link downloads a suspect file, mpg.exe, which is a Trojan downloader reports K. Conley, Symantec researcher. This downloader downloads a file, inst241.exe, which is detected as Trojan.Srizbi.

How can you protect your computer from a potentially dangerous malware scam? There may be no way currently that you can absolutely protect your operating system, 100% of the time. However, there are things you can do to minimize your risks. Even though internet security software (like the popular Norton Internet Security and Spyware Doctor) doesnt catch all malware; often, they block most of it.

Both Norton Internet Security and Spyware Doctors are popular, prevent malware and well worth the investment. Another way you can protect your computer and files is to exercise caution when opening and reading email. The best advice we can offer is to open ONLY email that you know to be safe those emails that come from known sources.
