Health And Safety In The Workplace To Strengthen Risk Management

We live in a society which is controversial by instinct. Risk management has become a necessity for businesses, just as important as the maintenance of accounts. The Employees are an integral part of the organization and the health and safety of the employees should be taken care of, if the employer wants to strengthen risk management.
There are two options with the company, one being doing the risk assessment by themselves and the second is outsourcing the work. Usually the small companies do the risk assessment by themselves. On the other hand , to minimizing the possible risks, the big companies outsource this work to private health and safety inspectors or experts.
In some cases the company though being small, may be dealing or manufacturing or using extremely hazardous chemicals and other products. In these sort of cases, it becomes difficult to be objective and have a clear insight into the things and situations around you.
Health And Safety In The Workplace means not only the removal of risk element but also to protect the employer , employees and other members of the society closely attached with the organization or industry.
The main stages of basic risk assessment are :
1 Hazard identification and list of probable victims
2 Decision about the course of action with reference to the intensity of risk.
3 Implementation of essential precautions and keeping its record.
After this a regular review is necessary to make sure that the original appraisal was correct.
The hazards can be divided into three parts :
1 Environmental hazards: i.e. smoke, grit or dust.
2 Activity hazards: i.e. repetitive strain injury.
3 Workplace hazards: Some of the common workplace hazards are as follows:
o storage, handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals
o Defective electrical equipment
o cabling may be loose
o rest breaks may be Insufficient
o Floors may be Wet, badly surfaced, unclean, slippery, or Poorly lit.
o Ventilation may not be Inadequate
o Workstations are poorly designed
o Procedures or training are usually inappropriate.
4 The Process of identifying the hazards should involve the employees so that there is a range of view bout the risks.
5 Classification of risks into high , medium and low risk follows the identification process. Immediate attention should be given to high and medium risk problems
6 Minimizing the work place risk includes introduction of new procedures, replacing of old equipment, modernization of training, Using safety clothes, safety shoes, replacing hazardous substance with less hazardous substance, using the least hazardous the maximum.
7 Risk assessment is not compulsory in companies having less than 5 employees. One should remember that Prevention is better than cure.
8 In the short term the risk assessment can save you from litigation. In long term it helps by ensuring the employees life .
Thus we can say that the Health And Safety are the best keys in The Workplace To Strengthen Risk Management.
