How To Choose The Right Furniture For Your Dining Room

By: Anna Stenning

Even though many will argue that the kitchen is the more popular dining area as opposed to the designated dining room. The dining room is therefore seen as a formal dining area, where guests are handed food on an expensive platter as opposed gathering round in the kitchen sharing a larger platter of finger food. Dining furniture it would seem will move from the dining room to the kitchen, making it a trendy eating space.

However, choosing the right dining furniture need not be an unfashionable experience, because of the demand for space. Furthermore, the dining furniture that you choose can be much more versatile than simply allowing for comfort and ease of eating ones dinner. The dining room has become a place for intimate romantic moments, a place for children to complete their homework (or so it would seem!), joining in on large family gatherings, playing games on or just simply socialising around in.

Having a dining room is like an extra space to relax upon and enjoy fine cuisine over. Before purchasing your new furniture, there are few things to remember with regards to the design. Firstly, you will need to consider how many people will be dining in the room. For example, if there is only two or three of you, there is no point in buying furnishing that seats eight or more, unless you hold regularly dinner parties!

Furthermore, it will need to fit in the room, so if you have a dining room that is small, then getting a large table will only make the room look cramped and cluttered. This will also make the room appear smaller, so you will need to find something that does not waste space but allows room for movement. A dining table ideally needs to be strong enough to hold a numerate amount of cuisines, therefore it will need to be extremely sturdy and require little maintenance.

This will also act as a study or office room; therefore you should avoid trying to follow any traditions and standard ways of picking out where it should go. As long as it allows room for walking around then it does not always matter what design you opt for. However, if you are fussy about it matching or complimenting the rest of decor in your house, then you should aim to find something that is comfortable and neutral. Standard design are not necessarily comfortable to sit on, therefore, you should go for something that will feel comfortable to sit on for a prolonged period.

The next step in finding the right dining furniture is to think about the style. As I have mentioned before, try not to fret about the design, as long as it does not stand out or make the room look awkward compared to the rest of the furniture. The general theme of the house should be carried out through to the dining room; therefore, it is a good idea to choose carefully on the material and colour of the furniture. This includes making sure that it coordinates well with the colour of the wall and give out a certain family feel making it appear comforting.

Your main objective of when picking out the dining furniture is that it is comfortable, providing a warm cosy feel and also can be utilised in different ways. It is not always easy to find something that is all of the above and more, therefore it is a good idea to simply take your time. Buying something in haste will guarantee you will buy something poorly matched and unsuitable. If money is an issue, sometimes you may be able to find something on auction websites or second hand that are more than likely to be in good condition. You may also be lucky enough to come across discounted furniture in warehouses, because they may have been overstocked.

If you are purchasing the furniture just as you are redecorating the house, it is easy to have all of your furniture match up together, then painting the walls that match the theme. Some people find that adding little details such as a centrepiece and place mats add character to the furniture making the room look and feel more interesting.
