How To Design A Search Engine Friendly Website

By: Peter Brittain

In addition to designing an attractive Website, it is now crucial to ensure that that the Website appears on top searches, at least by the more prominent search engines. An attractive Website now has to jockey with millions of similar sites to attain pole position. There are many self-proclaimed designing gurus that guarantee that their Websites could land at the top of the heap but the fact is that it is nearly impossible to control any search engine. Instead, here are a few steps that you could take in order to design a search engine friendly website.

Research, Compile and Insert Quality Keywords: You should first research all the related and popular keywords that you feel will be used by your visitors. Type those short listed keywords in the main search engines in order to check out the Websites thrown up by that word. This will provide you with enough words that show some promise. Compile these keywords into a meaningful article of around 300 words that not only provides information and knowledge to your targeted visitors but also convinces the search engine about the genuineness of your site. Be sure to insert your keywords at least two or three times in the first 300 words and distribute them at equal intervals in your content.
Realize The Importance Of Your Title Tag: Most search engines base their search on the relevance of the title tag. Thus, it is imperative for your title tag to be specific and related to your nature of business. Do not insert a general title tag in your Website since this might result in your Website getting lost in a sea of other sites. Instead, assume that your visitors might be searching for specific information, and provide that specific fodder to the hungry search engine to match it to your visitor's need. Heading Tags, which are subheadings used to separate different sections of your Web page also need to contain the keywords that are vital to your Website.
Sprinkle Meta Tags For Mega Effects: Meta tags, once considered a sure-shot method to land on top of the charts has been misused to such an extent that major search engines now consider an excess of meta tags a sign of spamming, but you can use a sprinkling however. Each of the Meta tags should consist of your keywords. Your title Meta tag should explain in brief about the purpose of your Website. Follow your description Meta tag that explains the superior benefits of using your Website. You can optimize search engines to read quality content to match the search criteria, instead of just searching for related words.
Hidden Keywords Do Not Ensure Higher Ratings: In fact, you can now program search engines to recognize sites with hidden keywords as spam; using such methods, however, could end up with the engine disqualifying your page.
Use Images Wisely To Push You Up The Search Ladder. Larger images will only end up slowing down your Website. Use small images with a resolution up to 72ppi to ensure a decent speed. Use the ‘alt’ tag to attach a small description to the image since search engines sift through spider text and not images.

The above tips could propel your Website to the top of all the major engine searches. By realizing the algorithm on which the search engines operate and satisfying that need, you can certainly design a search engine friendly Website.
