Key West - Explore the Southernmost Tip of the Continental Unites States

By: Gabriel Amorocho

At the southernmost tip of the continental United States, you'll find the tropical paradise known as Key West. This small island, closer to Havana than to Miami, offers the visitor a fun-filled vacation destination with a colorful history. Experience it for yourself when you arrange your perfect Key West lodging.

No matter when you plan your stay in one of our Key West rentals, you're likely to have wonderful weather. The temperate climate here ranges in the 70s and 80s year-round. This charming island has drawn its share of characters over the years, providing a haven for smugglers and pirates, fishermen and writers. Although the newer part has been fully developed, so that you can find whatever you might need, the Old Town section, with its narrow streets and gingerbread homes, retains much of the roguish charm of old.

There are many ways to experience the delights of this area around your Key West accommodations. You can take the Old Town Trolley or the Conch Tour Train to get the lay of the land. Biking and walking are also good options, since it's fairly easy to cover the area on an island that's just 3.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide

You might begin by heading out from your Key West lodging to Olivia and Whitehead Streets. Here you can tour Hemingway House, long the home of Ernest Hemingway. The grounds are now the residence of more than 60 cats, descendents of the author's original six-toed cat. Continue down Whitehead Street and you can visit Audubon House, where the ornithologist did much of his painting. The house is now a museum, featuring a collection of his original lithographs. Farther down the street, you can spend some time at the Key West Lighthouse Museum before returning to your Key West accommodation.

Of course, plenty of people plan a stay in hotels in Key West Florida not for the history, but for the fun. The calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean that surround the island are remarkably clear and inviting. Different beaches draw different types of crowds, so you can choose according to the level of rowdy fun or seclusion you prefer. Both on and under the water, you can enjoy a variety of water sports near your Key West rental. You can explore the incredible coral reefs, with their hundreds of species of tropical fish, either while snorkeling, diving, or taking a glass-bottom boat tour. Just north of Key West, you might take a guided kayak tour of the mangrove islands of Sugar Key and Geiger Key.

Whatever activities you fill your days with, you'll find that the locals are wonderfully friendly, and their laid-back attitude is contagious. Leave your watch at home, and let the day follow its own tempo. When you get hungry, you'll have numerous choices of restaurants around hotels in Key West Florida, many specializing in amazing seafood selections.

If the sun and the ocean, awash in a relaxed atmosphere, appeal to you, then it's time to arrange a stay in one of the Key West vacation rentals.
