Lower Your Phone Bill

By: Justin Lukasavige

While many households have dropped their home phone to make the switch to just their cell phones, the majority of US homes still have a landline phone for the majority of their calls.

Many options exist to lower your bill, and while some are geared towards the high-tech crowd, you can still save a bunch of money with low-tech options.

I use Vonage in my business as well as at home. Vonage has options that range from low-tech (you pull the equipment out of the box and plug it in) all the way to high-tech (requiring software and computers).

Most people that use Vonage, including me, use the easiest version. All that is required is a high-speed internet connection (usually cable or DSL) and Vonage equipment, purchased from www.vonage.com or at most stores including Best Buy or Circuit City.

Vonage works just like any regular phone, and you usually have the option of using your current phone with the service. Make sure the adapter you purchase has a port to plug a regular phone into the back.

The phone system we use at our home includes one phone that must be plugged in the internet connection and two phones that we can plug in anywhere there is an outlet. There does not have to be a phone outlet to work, just power.

We pay only $20 per month at home for 500 minutes (of which we have never used all of them). Incoming calls are free as are toll-free calls, unlike cell phones which charge you for both of those.

At Lukas Coaching we have the unlimited package for about $30 per month. That includes unlimited calls, both local and long distance!

Vonage has a promotion for the first 2 months of service for free. A quick search at Circuit City shows the equipment is free after rebate. There are no contracts at Vonage, so the service is essentially free if you want to try it for two months.

To get two months of free service, simply visit www.vonage.com and enter our phone number (919-342-0801) for the referral, or send an email to phone@lukascoaching.com for directions.

For less money, but a bit higher tech, check out www.magicjack.com for an adapter that plugs directly into your computer. Skype is another service that runs directly through your computer. While they offer many options, most of them are higher tech than using a regular phone.
