Ossie Clark - Over Hyped Fashion Designer?

By: Martin Davies

Ever since the evolution of vintage clothes one name sticks in the mind from the 1970s and that is Ossie Clark. He was a designer to the rich and famous such as the Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger.

Highly sort after, his designs can either be bought as part of your collection or to wear, his divine dresses it seems have become timeless. Ossie was born in Liverpool and studied at the Royal College for Art in London.

His designs are simply stunning and his style is why women enjoy his feminine moss crepe and satin creations. Ossie designed stunning outfits for icons of the 1970s and was worshipped by fashion followers the world over.

His marriage to Celia Birtwell produced the most exquisite feminine garments and there is nothing more important than seeing Clark and Birtwell on the label of a vintage dress but you do not really have to look because a Celia Birtwell print is unlike any other of its time.

It was a marriage made in heaven in the design sense as well as in spirit.

Serious collectors of vintage clothing appreciate his designs and how much he influenced fashion in the 1970s but the abundance of common Radley garments often detract from his true skills as a cutting edge British designer.

The Ossie Clark story ends in tragedy with his murder at the hands of his young partner although one cannot help thinking that maybe if he was still alive today his garments may not sell for such high prices at auction.

No vintage clothing collection would be complete without at least one good Ossie dress or suit. Over thirty years on from his first garments, the Ossie Clark vintage dress is still a must in every fashionable closet.

Vintage clothes enthusiasts recognise the value of his garments and prices have risen continually over the past few years for his dresses in particular. Celebrities adorn his designs on catwalks and press shots alike and his designs are caught in a timeless elegance that women all over the world love.

If you are lucky enough to own a true Ossie there is always a story behind how and why you bought it such as a wedding or a special occasion, or maybe recently at auction or from an exclusive vintage clothing boutique.

If you are thinking of purchasing an Ossie Clark dress there are many places to browse and buy, a good place to start is to search online for a reputable vintage clothing boutique who specialise in British designers from the era.

This gives you the chance to see a selection of dresses before you buy and time to ask as many questions as you need. There are also many auction houses where the very best of vintage clothes can be bought.

Ossie Clark items are regally sold at some top auctioneers like Sotheby's where incredible Ossie originals can be bid on and in some cases his most desirable creations can fetch thousands of pounds.
