Temp Cover Could Save You

I have spent much of my working life living abroad and one of the things that has struck me as strange when I have returned back to the UK is that the British have a very different attitude to their vehicles than the Americans or South Africans. People in England never share a vehicle and would never lend it to someone so that they can quickly make a run to the shops.

In America and South Africa this is the norm and the reason that people can be so sharing with their vehicles is that in these countries the insurance companies tend to insure the vehicles as opposed to insuring the individual that drives the vehicle. That means that in those countries anyone that has a full licence can drive the vehicle and if there is an accident the costs will be covered.

I recently forgot that I was in the UK and asked a friend if I could borrow his car to make a trip to the shops but was met with a Paddington hard stare for my troubles. It was like I'd asked him for a night with his wife. This was partly as a result of my not-exactly-impeccable driving record but was mostly due to the fact that this kind of thing is unheard of in the UK.

As a result it means that if you are an ex-pat returning to the UK for a holiday, a student back from University for a break or someone that is moving home and is in need of transport it can be difficult to borrow a car. Fortunately there are an increasing number of insurance providers that offer a short term or temp cover arrangement that means that you can insure yourself on a vehicle for a short time period.

Insurance can be arranged over a short period and this can offer a number of benefits. Firstly it means that people that want to lend their vehicle to someone do not have to add people to their existing policy. Temp cover arrangements are usually arranged via the phone or the internet and policy documents can usually be faxed or emailed to the recipient immediately so that you can drive around immediately with a copy of the policy document in hand. The other major benefit of this type of coverage is that you can arrange it over a short period of time and you will not have to tie yourself into a long term insurance cover arrangement.

The temp cover arrangements that are offered by insurance providers have become extremely popular with people that want to borrow a vehicle for a holiday, people that need to drive a car that is owned by someone that has been admitted to hospital and even people that want to make a trip to the dump! Arranging this type of insurance cover is great for people that do not want to get stung by high car hire costs.

It obviously means that you have to know someone that is willing to lend you a car but if that is the case then you will undoubtedly save money. Coverage can be arranged with immediate effect so if you want to arrange to test drive a vehicle or if you want to drive a vehicle that you have just purchased home then it could be for you.
