Since the mid-1990s, web development has proven to be one of the fastest growing industries in the nation. In 1995 there were fewer than 1,000 web development businesses in the United States, but by 2005 there were over 30,000 such businesses.
The web development industry is expected to grow over 20% by 2010. The evolution of this industry is being pushed by large businesses wishing to provide products and services to their customers and to computerize business demands, as well as the expantion of many small web design and development companies.
So what is web development? Web development is a sweeping term for any functions associated with developing a web site for the World Wide Web or an intranet.
This can include e-commerce business development, web design, web content development, client-side/server-side coding, and web server configuration. However, among web designers, "web development" generally refers only to the non-design elements of creating web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding. Web development can span developing the most basic static single page of plain text to the most complicated web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network services.
For larger businesses and organizations, web development groups may consist of hundreds of workers (web developers). Less complex organizations may only need one permanent or contracting webmaster, or secondary assignment to similar job positions such as a graphic designer and/or Information systems technician. Web development may be a joint task between departments as opposed to the responsibility of a single department.
