Tsuba and its powers

One of the greatest cultures this planet has ever enjoyed can be found on the island of Japan. A tumultuous history filled with oppression and various events has led the people on this relatively small island to develop a unique culture.

One the best known parts of the Japanese culture is the one with the samurai. During the 14th to 16th century, there was war in Japan, which meant that the weapons were manufactured for practical purposes. The beginning of the 17th century marked the start of a period of peace, which also led to more ornamental designs in war gear.

One of the things that has resisted in time, an item related to the weapons of the samurai is the tsuba. This is usually a round and sometimes square piece of metal found at the end of the grip in samurai swords, placed there for the protection of the wielder’s hands.

The tsuba is usually a finely decorated piece of metal – iron, brass, steel, copper, shakudo or gold – which has reached the level where it is a collector’s item. Some people, especially the ones with samurai origins, have transformed the tsuba into an heirloom, passing it to next generations, due to the engraving of their family crest into that piece.

The designs found on a tsuba can be viewed as a reflection of Japanese tradition. This is due to the fact that many dynasties of craftsmen have manufactured their own designs to reflect the period in which they were in and the surrounding environment.

The Edo period of the Japanese history, the one marked by piece and tranquility, had many talents in poetry, but Matsuo Basho was the most renowned of them all. Nowadays, his poetry is renowned all over the world, and in his time he was recognized as master of haiku.

Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry characterized by small vowels and lines used to describe a moment that the poet has experienced in direct truth. It doesn’t use metaphors or other forms of written illustrations to fill the poem with imagery. Haiku poetry is characterized as a brief description of a single moment and it is so pure that when you read one, you can almost see the surroundings of the poet at that time.

Matsuo Basho spent most of his life as a teacher, but he traveled all over the country to get inspiration from all things around him, something that can be easily observed in his works. One of the best known designs that the tsuba follows is dedicated to him.
