With more people spending more time on the internet, internet advertising is the way of the future. Some companies a combination of advertising strategies with television and radio ads targeting a certain demographic while the online component targets the more general public. With millions of people going online daily, a single advertising campaign can reach as much as 300,000 people in an hour, which causes a really expanded sphere of influence for internet advertisers. This is a huge change from the conventional methods of advertising and business analysts also say that as more people are reached by strategies employed by internet marketers, internet advertising can more effectively drive sales, and generate higher revenue for businesses. It also gives immediate feedback and in a matter of seconds, advertisers are able to measure the effectiveness of their campaigns based on the number of user views, responses and clicks on a particular ad.

If there are advantages to internet advertising, there are also disadvantages. For the most part, most internet users already have a purpose for surfing the web, so there will be a lot of times that ads are ignored. Not only that, most ads are made for the general public and do not target certain demographic characteristics so even if they do notice the ad, a lot will not choose to click. Aside from these, an advertiser needs to know a lot about the technical side of web development, which in itself is very tedious and requires a huge amount of time and effort.

If you are wondering how internet advertising works, there are quite a few strategies used. Some post clickable banners at the top or the bottom of a popular web page. Others use pop ups while some tries to build customer relations by sending emails and newsletters to their members. Some sites tailor contests available only for their online visitors and there are others which gives out discount to orders made online or perhaps gift coupons which are redeemable after a certain amount of purchase has been made. Others still create communities where people with the same interests can talk about personals, where they can view items for sale, and the services offered by a local community. Many sites attempt to drive traffic to their site through social book marking and registering to search engines, a strategy known as search engine optimization.
