Why Increase Reading Speed Is So Important

We are clearly in a time when information is not only readily available, it often comes rushing at us too fast. The media blasts information at us through magazines, newspapers, via television and radio broadcasting.

On top of that, with a computer and internet connection, the potential for gathering information is simply unlimited. And, while there has been a strong interest for decades in how to increase reading speed, there is now a surge of interest in how to "speed your read," to help people deal with the gathered facts.

There are many ways that people can take in the information they seek. One way to see the trends, is to watch the evolution of internet web sites. Audio and video are now important aspects of many websites that try to attract visitors. However, when people are seeking out specific information, there is nothing better than being able to peruse the written word quickly and gleaning the information needed.

Many internet users have reported frustrations with websites that only offer information through an audio or video format. In this age when everyone is in short supply of time, it is simply easier to increase reading speed and skim through an article, than to find information by fast forwarding through a video.

While there are some who say the age of the written word is coming to an end, to be replaced with MP3s and YouTube video clips, the fact remains that there is simply no way for those informational formats to compete with the speed of the written word to deliver information. And, that is not even taking into account all of those who are already enrolled in speed reading classes, in order to learn how to process the information they need more quickly.

For many people, the desire to improve their reading IQ has lead to a significant rise in interest in fast reading courses, programs and software programs that are available in the marketplace today. No matter what your preferred learning style happens to be, there is a program available to help you learn how to read fast.

Many people want to learn how to read faster by attending a workshop or a seminar. These kinds of programs are often offered as two-day events, usually over a weekend. These programs are really designed to be an introduction to the concept of reading speed improvement and people should not expect to walk away from a two-day class with a significant increase in their ability to read faster.

Longer term courses to read faster are better suited for people who want to increase their reading speed by a factor of three times or more. In fact, someone who has taken a reading speed course and has practiced the skills consistently, could reach the level of being able to read 10,000 words per minute.

Compared with the average reading speed of 200 words per minute, this seems almost miraculous. For most people, they would be happy with tripling or quadrupling their reading speed and most of the courses claim that this is achievable with proper study and effort.

Even if you don't have the ability to take a speed reading course at the moment, you can very easily increase reading speed with one simple to use method. If you use your finger or a pen as a pointer to move across a line of text, this will help guide the eye and will avoid the common problem of your eyes moving backward and losing the correct place.

In addition to simply keeping your eyes flowing smoothly in the proper direction, you will also find that your hand has a tendency to move at about twice the pace of an average reader. With a little effort, this approach can almost double your reading speed in a very short time.
