Most recently, Rudy Giuliani was the GOP candidate to beat in the presidential campaign. But he ran such an inept campaign, antagonized such a large number of citizens, become such a self parody with his obsession on 911 and was really such an arrogant bastard that he lost his frontrunner status, got very few votes in all primaries, lost to Ron Paul in all states and finally surrendered. So Rudy didn't get his job done and he got fired by the people and by his own supporters.

Likewise, ingrained patterns of what is acceptable standards for success in a society start to fade out of fashion when people start to discover that these patterns don’ take them where they were told they would. The social system we all learned as kids which told us that one goes to school, then off to university, you get a job with a corporation and then retire at 65 with a retirement program and a gift watch from the company was a moral code, an expectancy, a blueprint which has been losing popularity as corporations failed, as colleges failed to properly educate to the extent that many graduates are functionally illiterate.
