Worldwide Monetary Troubles And Answers

By: GARKO

The South African economy was expected to have a rough ride this year and it has and there is no quick fix in sight.

People were advised to be extra careful this year when spending as they will start to feel the pinch from escalating food and petrol prices, high interest rates and the effects of the Nation South African inflation which climbed above 9 percent in February for the first time in almost five years, which caused many to be concerned that the interest rates could be going even higher .
Despite the attempts of the Reserve Bank to lower inflation by raising interest rates four times in 2007 the inflation rate has kept rising . The Rand is one of the few currencies in the world which has done worse than the dollar, decreasing by 15 percent in comparative value this year. This and a possible hike on electrical rates of 60% promise to keep inflation aloft well above that 3 to 6% .
The Reserve Bank's credibility is at stake. The inflation numbers may be too dramatic for them to do nothing.
Governor Tito Mboweni said on March 19 the rand's drop will keep inflation above the target for longer than forecast. Since the central bank predicted that the interest rate would start dropping down within acceptable range after the first quarter of 2008 and we seem to be going in the opposite direction that is not helping the Reserve’s reputation or credibility
The inflation of the price of food is a different story, the main force which is propelling that is the international shift towards growing of crops for food to growing of the same crops for biofuel, especially in the US..
The increase in gasoline prices is largely due to increased demand from countries such as China and India and this is likely to continue.
How does the average South African citizen persist through such economic turmoil and what is likely to come? Well that is a broad question and there is no one quick fix. There are many smaller solutions. One would be foolish to expect the answer to fall from the sky or from the oil corporations or from the government. It is up to individual problem solving and grassroots movements of new technologies.
